Primary Problem | ATC Human Performance |
Narrative:
Both aircraft were on opposite bases and did not have each other in sight. ATC was very busy and for the last several mins someone was inadvertently on tower frequency 'walking' over important xmissions. 3 aircraft were close in 3/4 mi to the approach end of runway 36. Contributing factors would be untimely transmission blockage explaining exactly which aircraft was to land first. Corrective action: sharp left turn, then a go around.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BTWN THE RPTR IN AN ATX SMA TURNING FINAL, AND ANOTHER ACFT TURNING FINAL FROM THE OPPOSITE BASE LEG TO FINAL. RPTR MADE A L TURN AND WENT AROUND. TWR WAS BLOCKED BY ANOTHER PLT 'WALKING' ON THE FREQ.
Narrative: BOTH ACFT WERE ON OPPOSITE BASES AND DID NOT HAVE EACH OTHER IN SIGHT. ATC WAS VERY BUSY AND FOR THE LAST SEVERAL MINS SOMEONE WAS INADVERTENTLY ON TWR FREQ 'WALKING' OVER IMPORTANT XMISSIONS. 3 ACFT WERE CLOSE IN 3/4 MI TO THE APCH END OF RWY 36. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WOULD BE UNTIMELY XMISSION BLOCKAGE EXPLAINING EXACTLY WHICH ACFT WAS TO LAND FIRST. CORRECTIVE ACTION: SHARP L TURN, THEN A GO AROUND.
