Narrative:
During cruise flight at FL210 from tys to iad, a pod smoke light illuminated indicating smoke in the ventral baggage bay, which is not accessible from the main cabin. The appropriate checklist was performed, an emergency was declared with ATC, and a diversion to tri airport was accomplished. The crash fire rescue equipment team inspected the pod and found the warning light was erroneous. No evacuate/evacuation was initiated per the checklist. There were no injuries and there was no damage to the aircraft. This sensor produces false indications during high humidity. Perhaps another type of sensor should be used.
