Narrative:
While preparing for departure, maintenance was summoned for 2 problems. The #1 engine oil quantity gauge did not test properly and a deferred item concerning the aft cabin zone temperature system appeared to be deferred incorrectly. I witnessed a mechanic change the oil quantity gauge which tested properly. We then turned our attention to the other problem -- aft cabin zone temperature system, which took some time and discussion with the crew to solve. Items and concerning the aft cabin temperature system were entered and signed off by maintenance. Due to the resulting item number -- oil quantity indicator -- dated jun/xa/99, was still open when we departed the gate at phl. Our error was not discovered until on the ground at dfw where a maintenance supervisor inspected the operation of the gauge and made a balancing entry in the logbook.

Title: A B727 DEPARTED PHL WITH A MAINT ITEM THAT HAD BEEN CORRECTED BUT NOT SIGNED OFF.
Narrative: WHILE PREPARING FOR DEP, MAINT WAS SUMMONED FOR 2 PROBS. THE #1 ENG OIL QUANTITY GAUGE DID NOT TEST PROPERLY AND A DEFERRED ITEM CONCERNING THE AFT CABIN ZONE TEMP SYS APPEARED TO BE DEFERRED INCORRECTLY. I WITNESSED A MECH CHANGE THE OIL QUANTITY GAUGE WHICH TESTED PROPERLY. WE THEN TURNED OUR ATTN TO THE OTHER PROB -- AFT CABIN ZONE TEMP SYS, WHICH TOOK SOME TIME AND DISCUSSION WITH THE CREW TO SOLVE. ITEMS AND CONCERNING THE AFT CABIN TEMP SYS WERE ENTERED AND SIGNED OFF BY MAINT. DUE TO THE RESULTING ITEM NUMBER -- OIL QUANTITY INDICATOR -- DATED JUN/XA/99, WAS STILL OPEN WHEN WE DEPARTED THE GATE AT PHL. OUR ERROR WAS NOT DISCOVERED UNTIL ON THE GND AT DFW WHERE A MAINT SUPVR INSPECTED THE OP OF THE GAUGE AND MADE A BALANCING ENTRY IN THE LOGBOOK.
