Narrative:
Lost communications with ZJX along J86 over the gulf of mexico. Troubleshot radios with maintenance control via phone patch. Unable to rectify problem. Established communication with ZJX (phone patch) through air carrier dispatcher. Switched over to tpa approach who cleared us for approach, landing and taxi to gate. As a side note, we did not squawk 7600 lost communication because we had relay contact with controling center. In speaking with maintenance, problem was determined to be short in captain's microphone jack and possible radio transmitter -- aircraft with new crew continued uneventfully to destination.
