Narrative:
Dfw ramp tower advised me aircraft agent put 1600 pounds (instead of 1000 pounds entered) cargo in forward bin #1 of MD88, and was mistake on his part. Local dfw operations tried to reach aircraft before takeoff after error was discovered, but aircraft had departed (dfw-sat). Called company load planners for numbers for landing due to actual weights -- aircraft out of balance for landing. Informed immediately the crew of possible nose heavy landing and requested course of action from control center pilot representative who was also MD88 first officer. He was unaware of procedure to use. Load control calculated weights for landing by moving 3 passenger in first class to rear of airplane to bring aircraft into balance. This was relayed to crew and they were able to accomplish this before landing. Load planners filed this into flight history for landing confign. Landing uneventful. Informed captain of how chain of events occurred after landing. Problem: when discrepancy occurs, too much times goes by before dispatch receives information -- resolved in air -- but if takeoff was out of balance -- problem if unable to contact.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD88 FLC IS NOTIFIED THAT THEIR ACFT WT AND BAL IS OUT OF TOLERANCE FOR LNDG AT SAT, TX. 3 PAX MOVED FROM FIRST CLASS TO COACH.
Narrative: DFW RAMP TWR ADVISED ME ACFT AGENT PUT 1600 LBS (INSTEAD OF 1000 LBS ENTERED) CARGO IN FORWARD BIN #1 OF MD88, AND WAS MISTAKE ON HIS PART. LCL DFW OPS TRIED TO REACH ACFT BEFORE TKOF AFTER ERROR WAS DISCOVERED, BUT ACFT HAD DEPARTED (DFW-SAT). CALLED COMPANY LOAD PLANNERS FOR NUMBERS FOR LNDG DUE TO ACTUAL WTS -- ACFT OUT OF BAL FOR LNDG. INFORMED IMMEDIATELY THE CREW OF POSSIBLE NOSE HVY LNDG AND REQUESTED COURSE OF ACTION FROM CTL CTR PLT REPRESENTATIVE WHO WAS ALSO MD88 FO. HE WAS UNAWARE OF PROC TO USE. LOAD CTL CALCULATED WTS FOR LNDG BY MOVING 3 PAX IN FIRST CLASS TO REAR OF AIRPLANE TO BRING ACFT INTO BAL. THIS WAS RELAYED TO CREW AND THEY WERE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THIS BEFORE LNDG. LOAD PLANNERS FILED THIS INTO FLT HISTORY FOR LNDG CONFIGN. LNDG UNEVENTFUL. INFORMED CAPT OF HOW CHAIN OF EVENTS OCCURRED AFTER LNDG. PROB: WHEN DISCREPANCY OCCURS, TOO MUCH TIMES GOES BY BEFORE DISPATCH RECEIVES INFO -- RESOLVED IN AIR -- BUT IF TKOF WAS OUT OF BAL -- PROB IF UNABLE TO CONTACT.
