Narrative:
While en route from redding, ca, to carlsbad, ca, I was flying a rockwell commander AC11 at 7500 ft MSL while on flight following intending to fly over sfo. I was in contact with oakland approach approximately 40 mi from sfo when they gave me a directive I took to mean that he would hand me off to san francisco approach for further advisories. In hindsight, I think he told me to contact them in 5 mi but I wasn't sure at the time. I thought he would hand me off sometime closer to sfo. I was talking to my wife and didn't remember that I needed a clearance to enter class B airspace. Later, 20 mi south of sfo they contacted me through a beech king air. Although I could hear other traffic the entire time I had thought I was still in contact. I was obviously wrong. I know that I flew across sfo airspace without a clearance in violation of the FARS. To remedy future occurrences I need to concentrate more fully on the flying priority, less on my passenger and remain in communication with ATC at all times, and, try not to become distracted.
