Narrative:

While hand flying the intermediate approach segment of den runway 35L ILS and configured with flaps 5 degrees at 200 KIAS, ATC requested 180 KIAS. I, in turn, requested 'flaps 10 degrees' from my first officer. After selecting that flap position, the trailing edge flap needles split and a slight roll top the left was induced and promptly countered. I engaged an autoplt, took ATC communications and requested to break off the approach, while my first officer ran the asymmetric trailing edge flaps checklist. The first officer also called our maintenance controller to confer with. After he initiated that call (5 mins has now elapsed), the flap needles remarried at the now flaps 5 degree selected position (the checklist calls for placing the flap lever in the last position where flaps were symmetrical). The maintenance controller then suggested reattempting selection of progressively grater flap settings all the way to approach flaps. This was done with no further split and a normal landing was accomplished.

Title: AN MLG CAPT, ON APCH TO DEN, EXPERIENCED A FLAP ASYMMETRY AT FLAPS 10 DEGS, BUT WAS LATER ABLE TO RESTORE NORMAL FUNCTIONING.

Narrative: WHILE HAND FLYING THE INTERMEDIATE APCH SEGMENT OF DEN RWY 35L ILS AND CONFIGURED WITH FLAPS 5 DEGS AT 200 KIAS, ATC REQUESTED 180 KIAS. I, IN TURN, REQUESTED 'FLAPS 10 DEGS' FROM MY FO. AFTER SELECTING THAT FLAP POS, THE TRAILING EDGE FLAP NEEDLES SPLIT AND A SLIGHT ROLL TOP THE L WAS INDUCED AND PROMPTLY COUNTERED. I ENGAGED AN AUTOPLT, TOOK ATC COMS AND REQUESTED TO BREAK OFF THE APCH, WHILE MY FO RAN THE ASYMMETRIC TRAILING EDGE FLAPS CHKLIST. THE FO ALSO CALLED OUR MAINT CTLR TO CONFER WITH. AFTER HE INITIATED THAT CALL (5 MINS HAS NOW ELAPSED), THE FLAP NEEDLES REMARRIED AT THE NOW FLAPS 5 DEG SELECTED POS (THE CHKLIST CALLS FOR PLACING THE FLAP LEVER IN THE LAST POS WHERE FLAPS WERE SYMMETRICAL). THE MAINT CTLR THEN SUGGESTED REATTEMPTING SELECTION OF PROGRESSIVELY GRATER FLAP SETTINGS ALL THE WAY TO APCH FLAPS. THIS WAS DONE WITH NO FURTHER SPLIT AND A NORMAL LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED.
