Narrative:
While en route we performed a 360 degree turn while on the airway. The purpose was for training. We had forgotten that we were on an IFR flight plan and forgot to get authority/authorized from ATC. ATC alerted us and all maneuvering was stopped. The aircraft never flew more than .5 NM from airway centerline. It was a slow night and there was little talk on the radios resulting in us forgetting we were on IFR flight plan.
