Narrative:

Leveling at FL270, captain flying. Crew heard cabin altitude alarm. Flight engineer initiated depressurization procedures, closed cargo heat valve. At same time, captain pulled back power to cruise and cabin altitude appeared to climb. Captain ordered oxygen and, to be on the safe side, initiated descent with mia and declared an emergency. With throttles now at idle, flight engineer discovered he had inadvertently turned off the left pack. He advised the captain and I added power to slow descent and give him air to regain control of pressurization. Terminated emergency with ZMA, climbed back to altitude, and continued to lrm without further problem. Lesson learned. Don't pull back power too soon -- it delays pressurization recovery. Supplemental information from acn 469130: I noted the time and conditions of the occurrence and deduced that the pack was turned off during the climb.

Title: A LEVELING B727-200 LOSES ITS CABIN PRESSURIZATION WITH THE CAPT DECLARING AN EMER DURING DSCNT. THE SO DISCOVERS THE L PACK TURNED OFF. MIA, FL.

Narrative: LEVELING AT FL270, CAPT FLYING. CREW HEARD CABIN ALT ALARM. FE INITIATED DEPRESSURIZATION PROCS, CLOSED CARGO HEAT VALVE. AT SAME TIME, CAPT PULLED BACK PWR TO CRUISE AND CABIN ALT APPEARED TO CLB. CAPT ORDERED OXYGEN AND, TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE, INITIATED DSCNT WITH MIA AND DECLARED AN EMER. WITH THROTTLES NOW AT IDLE, FE DISCOVERED HE HAD INADVERTENTLY TURNED OFF THE L PACK. HE ADVISED THE CAPT AND I ADDED PWR TO SLOW DSCNT AND GIVE HIM AIR TO REGAIN CTL OF PRESSURIZATION. TERMINATED EMER WITH ZMA, CLBED BACK TO ALT, AND CONTINUED TO LRM WITHOUT FURTHER PROB. LESSON LEARNED. DON'T PULL BACK PWR TOO SOON -- IT DELAYS PRESSURIZATION RECOVERY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 469130: I NOTED THE TIME AND CONDITIONS OF THE OCCURRENCE AND DEDUCED THAT THE PACK WAS TURNED OFF DURING THE CLB.
