Narrative:
Level FL290 on the janesville 4 arrival into ord. Cleared to cross 30 mi west of jvl (mytch fix) at FL240. Selected FL240 in the MCP and in the FMC. Crew became distraction with logbook entries and failed to check if VNAV selected. At mytch fix at FL290, queried by next controller if we had been previously cleared to FL240. Then he cleared us to 10000 ft. No traffic conflicts. Supplemental information from acn 472367: there was a distraction during the descent. The #1 flight attendant was passing up the write-ups for the logbook so they could be called in prior to landing. I thought he had also selected VNAV protecting our descent. I normally request write-ups prior to descent, but the flight attendants do not always come up prior to descent. This gives maintenance a heads up on inbound problems.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 FLC FAILS TO MAKE THE ALT XING RESTR AT MYTCH INTXN AS ASSIGNED BY ZAU, IL.
Narrative: LEVEL FL290 ON THE JANESVILLE 4 ARR INTO ORD. CLRED TO CROSS 30 MI W OF JVL (MYTCH FIX) AT FL240. SELECTED FL240 IN THE MCP AND IN THE FMC. CREW BECAME DISTR WITH LOGBOOK ENTRIES AND FAILED TO CHK IF VNAV SELECTED. AT MYTCH FIX AT FL290, QUERIED BY NEXT CTLR IF WE HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY CLRED TO FL240. THEN HE CLRED US TO 10000 FT. NO TFC CONFLICTS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 472367: THERE WAS A DISTR DURING THE DSCNT. THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT WAS PASSING UP THE WRITE-UPS FOR THE LOGBOOK SO THEY COULD BE CALLED IN PRIOR TO LNDG. I THOUGHT HE HAD ALSO SELECTED VNAV PROTECTING OUR DSCNT. I NORMALLY REQUEST WRITE-UPS PRIOR TO DSCNT, BUT THE FLT ATTENDANTS DO NOT ALWAYS COME UP PRIOR TO DSCNT. THIS GIVES MAINT A HEADS UP ON INBOUND PROBS.
