Narrative:
Same old story. Long day, tired, hot, anxious to get home and rest, relax and take a shower. Vectored for right downwind to runway 28L but told on downwind to land runway 28R (much shorter) instead. Found myself way high and way fast on final. Brain screaming 'go around' but desire to get it on the ground overrode common sense. Forced it onto the runway past midpoint and couldn't stop in time. Thank god runway 28R has a paved overrun area. Moral of the story? Several: 1) poor approachs lead to poor lndgs. 2) if it doesn't feel right, there's usually a reason. 3) never ignore that voice in the back of your mind telling you something is wrong. Responsibility? 100% mine. If I wasn't comfortable with the shorter runway, I should have refused the landing clearance on runway 28R. Need more practice.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PA28 PLT LANDS LONG ON RWY 28R AND RUNS OFF THE END OF THE RWY ONTO THE 157 FT STOPWAY OVERRUN AT THE END AT MRY, CA.
Narrative: SAME OLD STORY. LONG DAY, TIRED, HOT, ANXIOUS TO GET HOME AND REST, RELAX AND TAKE A SHOWER. VECTORED FOR R DOWNWIND TO RWY 28L BUT TOLD ON DOWNWIND TO LAND RWY 28R (MUCH SHORTER) INSTEAD. FOUND MYSELF WAY HIGH AND WAY FAST ON FINAL. BRAIN SCREAMING 'GO AROUND' BUT DESIRE TO GET IT ON THE GND OVERRODE COMMON SENSE. FORCED IT ONTO THE RWY PAST MIDPOINT AND COULDN'T STOP IN TIME. THANK GOD RWY 28R HAS A PAVED OVERRUN AREA. MORAL OF THE STORY? SEVERAL: 1) POOR APCHS LEAD TO POOR LNDGS. 2) IF IT DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT, THERE'S USUALLY A REASON. 3) NEVER IGNORE THAT VOICE IN THE BACK OF YOUR MIND TELLING YOU SOMETHING IS WRONG. RESPONSIBILITY? 100% MINE. IF I WASN'T COMFORTABLE WITH THE SHORTER RWY, I SHOULD HAVE REFUSED THE LNDG CLRNC ON RWY 28R. NEED MORE PRACTICE.
