Narrative:
While taxing (very short taxi) from cargo ramp to runway 25L instructed to hold short of taxiway F on taxiway a. Running checklist, first officer missed radio call by ground to taxi taxiway F. Captain answered call and heard taxi taxiway F across runway 25L&right. So was new and engrossed in running checklist and did not hear the call either. About to cross the runway 25L hold short line, first officer asked 'are we cleared across?' captain responded 'yes.' so responded 'don't know.' first officer called and 'understood cleared across runway 25L.' ground responded 'no, but now you are.' ground responded 'be more careful.' there was no traffic on runway 25L. Captain was taxiing very slowly, else we would have penetrated the runway. Supplemental information from acn 473155: cleared to taxi to runway 25L and cross runway 25R. I was running checklist and wasn't sure if we were cleared to cross runway 25L and taxi to the parallel. As a new flight engineer, I missed the last part of the radio transmission while computing data for runway 25L (changed from runway 25R to runway 25L) and completing the before takeoff check.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 CREW ALMOST HAD A RWY INCURSION AT LAX.
Narrative: WHILE TAXING (VERY SHORT TAXI) FROM CARGO RAMP TO RWY 25L INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF TXWY F ON TXWY A. RUNNING CHKLIST, FO MISSED RADIO CALL BY GND TO TAXI TXWY F. CAPT ANSWERED CALL AND HEARD TAXI TXWY F ACROSS RWY 25L&R. SO WAS NEW AND ENGROSSED IN RUNNING CHKLIST AND DID NOT HEAR THE CALL EITHER. ABOUT TO CROSS THE RWY 25L HOLD SHORT LINE, FO ASKED 'ARE WE CLRED ACROSS?' CAPT RESPONDED 'YES.' SO RESPONDED 'DON'T KNOW.' FO CALLED AND 'UNDERSTOOD CLRED ACROSS RWY 25L.' GND RESPONDED 'NO, BUT NOW YOU ARE.' GND RESPONDED 'BE MORE CAREFUL.' THERE WAS NO TFC ON RWY 25L. CAPT WAS TAXIING VERY SLOWLY, ELSE WE WOULD HAVE PENETRATED THE RWY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 473155: CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 25L AND CROSS RWY 25R. I WAS RUNNING CHKLIST AND WASN'T SURE IF WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS RWY 25L AND TAXI TO THE PARALLEL. AS A NEW FE, I MISSED THE LAST PART OF THE RADIO XMISSION WHILE COMPUTING DATA FOR RWY 25L (CHANGED FROM RWY 25R TO RWY 25L) AND COMPLETING THE BEFORE TKOF CHK.
