Narrative:
We were cleared for a visual approach to runway 19L at mci. When we were on short final, mci tower controller cleared a company B737 for takeoff on runway 9. As we were touching down and company was lifting off, the controller realized his error. He called for company to 'cancel takeoff clearance.' this was impractical, since that aircraft was already airborne. He then asked us to hold short of runway 9. We agreed to hold short even though we were not permitted to participate in the lahso program. At no point were we a conflict with the runway 9 departing aircraft. He was well airborne by the runway 19L/9 intersection. We made a normal landing and rollout and were well short of runway 9. The controller seemed more concerned with a 'paper' conflict. His corrective action (canceling takeoff clearance for an aircraft at liftoff) would have created a greater danger and conflict. We accepted the 'hold short of runway 9' directive because it was the safest action. Additionally, it calmed a great deal of anxiety in the tower.

Title: B737 CREW WAS GIVEN LNDG CLRNC ON RWY WHICH CONFLICTED WITH AN ACFT GIVEN TKOF CLRNC.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 19L AT MCI. WHEN WE WERE ON SHORT FINAL, MCI TWR CTLR CLRED A COMPANY B737 FOR TKOF ON RWY 9. AS WE WERE TOUCHING DOWN AND COMPANY WAS LIFTING OFF, THE CTLR REALIZED HIS ERROR. HE CALLED FOR COMPANY TO 'CANCEL TKOF CLRNC.' THIS WAS IMPRACTICAL, SINCE THAT ACFT WAS ALREADY AIRBORNE. HE THEN ASKED US TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 9. WE AGREED TO HOLD SHORT EVEN THOUGH WE WERE NOT PERMITTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LAHSO PROGRAM. AT NO POINT WERE WE A CONFLICT WITH THE RWY 9 DEPARTING ACFT. HE WAS WELL AIRBORNE BY THE RWY 19L/9 INTXN. WE MADE A NORMAL LNDG AND ROLLOUT AND WERE WELL SHORT OF RWY 9. THE CTLR SEEMED MORE CONCERNED WITH A 'PAPER' CONFLICT. HIS CORRECTIVE ACTION (CANCELING TKOF CLRNC FOR AN ACFT AT LIFTOFF) WOULD HAVE CREATED A GREATER DANGER AND CONFLICT. WE ACCEPTED THE 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 9' DIRECTIVE BECAUSE IT WAS THE SAFEST ACTION.
