Narrative:
Pushback onto active taxiway. Were cleared to push from the gate at jfk onto taxi lane. This was passed to the push crew and acknowledged. During engine start, push crew moved the aircraft onto active taxiway a. We did not realize the mistake until too late to get the crew to stop or call jfk ground. Jfk ground was notified and said they would contact company. We contacted ramp to relay the error to company. Were informed company would debrief the push crew.
