Narrative:
A misreading of the elements of the loupe nine departure, linden transition. Mistake was discovered at approximately 6 mi from sjc VOR and immediate right turn back to the VOR was made to return to the 4 mi restr on the departure. At this point, TA was received on aircraft that departed after us at sjc. Aircraft was in sight, but was necessary for departure to climb us out of 5000 ft to 12000 ft. Departure procedure is confusing in that radar vector appears to be for another transition. Our first assumption was to intercept the 339 degree radial outbound to dyblo. Another factor was failure of flight directors on takeoff, an added distraction. In 2 previous weeks had flown sjc 8 departure which is very similar in beginning and assumed the vector line was to another transition. Suggestion (show vector line looping back around to sjc VOR).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MLG CREW HAD TRACK DEV FLYING THE LOUPE 9 SID AT SJC.
Narrative: A MISREADING OF THE ELEMENTS OF THE LOUPE NINE DEP, LINDEN TRANSITION. MISTAKE WAS DISCOVERED AT APPROX 6 MI FROM SJC VOR AND IMMEDIATE R TURN BACK TO THE VOR WAS MADE TO RETURN TO THE 4 MI RESTR ON THE DEP. AT THIS POINT, TA WAS RECEIVED ON ACFT THAT DEPARTED AFTER US AT SJC. ACFT WAS IN SIGHT, BUT WAS NECESSARY FOR DEP TO CLB US OUT OF 5000 FT TO 12000 FT. DEP PROC IS CONFUSING IN THAT RADAR VECTOR APPEARS TO BE FOR ANOTHER TRANSITION. OUR FIRST ASSUMPTION WAS TO INTERCEPT THE 339 DEG RADIAL OUTBOUND TO DYBLO. ANOTHER FACTOR WAS FAILURE OF FLT DIRECTORS ON TKOF, AN ADDED DISTR. IN 2 PREVIOUS WKS HAD FLOWN SJC 8 DEP WHICH IS VERY SIMILAR IN BEGINNING AND ASSUMED THE VECTOR LINE WAS TO ANOTHER TRANSITION. SUGGESTION (SHOW VECTOR LINE LOOPING BACK AROUND TO SJC VOR).
