Narrative:
Level at FL250, ATC inquired, 'what is your cleared altitude?' first officer replied, 'FL250.' ATC, 'you acknowledged FL230.' I looked at the altitude box and there was FL230. Earlier we had been cleared to FL250, 30 NM east of oxi. The aircraft captured FL250 before FL230 was placed in the altitude box. Either I didn't notice the capture or didn't hear the clearance to FL230. We had been diligent in following SOP regarding dialing in altitudes, pointing and confirming, so I suspect the former. During this period we were distraction discussing a write-up with flight attendants. When ATC called about our altitude, the first officer was filling out the logbook.

Title: THE FLC OF A B777 FAILS TO DSND IN ACCORDANCE WITH THEIR AMENDED CLRNC WHILE TENDING TO LOGBOOK WRITE-UPS NEAR OXI, IN.
Narrative: LEVEL AT FL250, ATC INQUIRED, 'WHAT IS YOUR CLRED ALT?' FO REPLIED, 'FL250.' ATC, 'YOU ACKNOWLEDGED FL230.' I LOOKED AT THE ALT BOX AND THERE WAS FL230. EARLIER WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO FL250, 30 NM E OF OXI. THE ACFT CAPTURED FL250 BEFORE FL230 WAS PLACED IN THE ALT BOX. EITHER I DIDN'T NOTICE THE CAPTURE OR DIDN'T HEAR THE CLRNC TO FL230. WE HAD BEEN DILIGENT IN FOLLOWING SOP REGARDING DIALING IN ALTS, POINTING AND CONFIRMING, SO I SUSPECT THE FORMER. DURING THIS PERIOD WE WERE DISTR DISCUSSING A WRITE-UP WITH FLT ATTENDANTS. WHEN ATC CALLED ABOUT OUR ALT, THE FO WAS FILLING OUT THE LOGBOOK.
