Narrative:
This is a common occurrence at midland with air carrier X. The flight is cleared, departs, and flies runway heading. Problem: runway heading was never assigned. They are cleared 'as filed.' after a couple of mi, the flight crew either 'reminds' us that they are on runway heading or asks to turn on course. After being reminded of their clearance, the flcs generally say they 'forgot' or that they are 'used to operating like that.' pilots must be more vigilant in their actions when the tower or approach control is closed. Business as usual will get you in trouble!
