Narrative:

Reporter was told to fly heading 250 degrees and join the airway (283 degrees) while climbing to 8000 ft. Reporter was distraction and flew through the airway on the assigned heading. He eventually approached the vicinity of a descending aircraft. Reporter estimates that he was still within the 8 NM airway when the problem was noticed and corrected (by reporter and ATC). The descending traffic was displayed on reporter's skywatch and acquired visually before the failure to join the airway was noticed. Total time on the 250 degree heading was about 2 1/2 mins. Reporter has just transitioned from a single engine (PA32) to a multi-engine (PA34) with many more system. He was attempting to set the altitude preselect on the autoplt when he should have been turning onto the airway.

Narrative: RPTR WAS TOLD TO FLY HDG 250 DEGS AND JOIN THE AIRWAY (283 DEGS) WHILE CLBING TO 8000 FT. RPTR WAS DISTR AND FLEW THROUGH THE AIRWAY ON THE ASSIGNED HDG. HE EVENTUALLY APCHED THE VICINITY OF A DSNDING ACFT. RPTR ESTIMATES THAT HE WAS STILL WITHIN THE 8 NM AIRWAY WHEN THE PROB WAS NOTICED AND CORRECTED (BY RPTR AND ATC).
