Narrative:
Cruising at altitude in clear VFR controled airspace, told by controller to turn immediately to 270 degrees and climb and maintain 8500 ft (left turn). We did so. Controller then asked what was our previous instructions as far as track and told us we were off course by 4 NM. We gathered we were in conflict with terrain. Captain stated we were to left of mountain we could see, off to our right, less than 1500 ft below. When I reviewed FMS for course guidance, noted captain had programmed FMS for approach to vny, with final approach fix on wrong side of course, we were tracking to final approach fix not to 'vny airport direct,' as instructed. So we and our aircraft were flying too close to mountainous terrain and must have set off his GPWS early warning system. In closing, I also neglected to doublechk FMS when I did my approach brief to verify that captain had loaded FMS correctly while reviewing approach plate. In closing, this was first flight of day, with new captain after 7 days off.

Title: A VMC C560 FLC IS VECTORED AND CLBED AWAY FROM HIGH TERRAIN DURING A HDG TRACK DEV SOME 35 MI NW OF VNY, CA.
Narrative: CRUISING AT ALT IN CLR VFR CTLED AIRSPACE, TOLD BY CTLR TO TURN IMMEDIATELY TO 270 DEGS AND CLB AND MAINTAIN 8500 FT (L TURN). WE DID SO. CTLR THEN ASKED WHAT WAS OUR PREVIOUS INSTRUCTIONS AS FAR AS TRACK AND TOLD US WE WERE OFF COURSE BY 4 NM. WE GATHERED WE WERE IN CONFLICT WITH TERRAIN. CAPT STATED WE WERE TO L OF MOUNTAIN WE COULD SEE, OFF TO OUR R, LESS THAN 1500 FT BELOW. WHEN I REVIEWED FMS FOR COURSE GUIDANCE, NOTED CAPT HAD PROGRAMMED FMS FOR APCH TO VNY, WITH FINAL APCH FIX ON WRONG SIDE OF COURSE, WE WERE TRACKING TO FINAL APCH FIX NOT TO 'VNY ARPT DIRECT,' AS INSTRUCTED. SO WE AND OUR ACFT WERE FLYING TOO CLOSE TO MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN AND MUST HAVE SET OFF HIS GPWS EARLY WARNING SYS. IN CLOSING, I ALSO NEGLECTED TO DOUBLECHK FMS WHEN I DID MY APCH BRIEF TO VERIFY THAT CAPT HAD LOADED FMS CORRECTLY WHILE REVIEWING APCH PLATE.
