Narrative:
My student was working on his single engine commercial rating. As a part of that training, I initiated a simulated engine failure over the new ulm airport. The grass runway 22 was the landing site chosen. We began circling from 4500 ft MSL. Upon reaching final, we were high. In my judgement, however, we had room to stop safely. Upon touchdown, I applied braking and realized that we were slipping on the grass, and would not be able to stop. So I added full power with 1 notch of flaps for a short field takeoff. As the end of the runway approached, I knew that we would not have enough airspeed to take off. Therefore, I closed the throttle and applied full braking as we went into the plowed field off runway 22. The aircraft soon came to rest and my student and I exited the main door with no injury. I should have not landed in the first place, or I should have stuck with my original decision to stop.
