Narrative:
I was cleared to taxi to runway 5 from the GA ramp at the base of the tower. I got on to taxiway a wbound. At this point, having always been cleared to runway 7 and never to runway 5, I kept taxiing thinking I was going to runway 7. I missed taxiway B that leads to runway 5 and crossed the hold short line without a clearance. Fortunately, the ground controller saw it and stopped me immediately before my aircraft was on the actual and active runway 5. I did an immediate right 180 degree turn and taxied to runway 5 via taxiway B. Fortunately again, there was no traffic taking off or landing on runway 5 during this incident. As soon as the controller yelled my n-number, I realized what I had done. Having never been cleared to runway 5 after flying from fmn for close to two years I automatically went taxiing to runway 7 as I had always done before I got complacent with ground/taxi operations out of fmn. I will always look at my airport diagram from now on when given an unusual taxi clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C182 PLT TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE DURING TAXI FOR TAKEOFF AT FMN.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 5 FROM THE GA RAMP AT THE BASE OF THE TWR. I GOT ON TO TXWY A WBOUND. AT THIS POINT, HAVING ALWAYS BEEN CLRED TO RWY 7 AND NEVER TO RWY 5, I KEPT TAXIING THINKING I WAS GOING TO RWY 7. I MISSED TXWY B THAT LEADS TO RWY 5 AND CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE WITHOUT A CLRNC. FORTUNATELY, THE GND CTLR SAW IT AND STOPPED ME IMMEDIATELY BEFORE MY ACFT WAS ON THE ACTUAL AND ACTIVE RWY 5. I DID AN IMMEDIATE R 180 DEG TURN AND TAXIED TO RWY 5 VIA TXWY B. FORTUNATELY AGAIN, THERE WAS NO TFC TAKING OFF OR LNDG ON RWY 5 DURING THIS INCIDENT. AS SOON AS THE CTLR YELLED MY N-NUMBER, I REALIZED WHAT I HAD DONE. HAVING NEVER BEEN CLRED TO RWY 5 AFTER FLYING FROM FMN FOR CLOSE TO TWO YEARS I AUTOMATICALLY WENT TAXIING TO RWY 7 AS I HAD ALWAYS DONE BEFORE I GOT COMPLACENT WITH GND/TAXI OPS OUT OF FMN. I WILL ALWAYS LOOK AT MY ARPT DIAGRAM FROM NOW ON WHEN GIVEN AN UNUSUAL TAXI CLRNC.
