Narrative:
Asked for lower altitude due to turbulence. Controller on frequency 133.12 said 'turn right 20 degrees descend to FL290.' both pilots heard turn right and first officer read back 'turn right 20 degrees.' turn was due to traffic climbing up and opposite direction to us. Five to ten mins later controller said 'turn to 240 degrees' and you should have turned left. We replied we had read back turn right. Basically we ahd passed the climbing aircraft on the let instead of the right. However, controller never made mention that we had initially turned the wrong direction until we had passed the other aircraft. Either he saw the turn was wrong and didn't say anything, or it didn't matter.

Title: ACFT FLC READBACK A 20 DEG RIGHT CLRNC WITHOUT CHALLENGE BY ZNY CTLR, LATER STATING THE FLC TURNED RIGHT INSTEAD OF LEFT.
Narrative: ASKED FOR LOWER ALT DUE TO TURB. CTLR ON FREQ 133.12 SAID 'TURN RIGHT 20 DEGS DSND TO FL290.' BOTH PLTS HEARD TURN RIGHT AND FO READ BACK 'TURN RIGHT 20 DEGS.' TURN WAS DUE TO TFC CLBING UP AND OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO US. FIVE TO TEN MINS LATER CTLR SAID 'TURN TO 240 DEGS' AND YOU SHOULD HAVE TURNED LEFT. WE REPLIED WE HAD READ BACK TURN RIGHT. BASICALLY WE AHD PASSED THE CLBING ACFT ON THE LET INSTEAD OF THE RIGHT. HOWEVER, CTLR NEVER MADE MENTION THAT WE HAD INITIALLY TURNED THE WRONG DIRECTION UNTIL WE HAD PASSED THE OTHER ACFT. EITHER HE SAW THE TURN WAS WRONG AND DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING, OR IT DIDN'T MATTER.
