Narrative:
Tower cleared us for takeoff on runway 13L. I released the brakes and was adding power when I heard another aircraft call, 'tower, did you just clear an aircraft to take off runway 13L?' I reduced the power back to idle and simultaneously looked out the left side of the aircraft to see an air carrier jet on short final for runway 17L. Normally, I look to clear the final for runway 17L before taking off of runway 13L, but this time I did not do so. The call by the other pilot was my first clue that something was possibly wrong. If I had taken off, I am positive we would have cleared the other aircraft, but the separation would have been too close for comfort and safety. I exited the runway and taxied back to the hold short to resume the departure.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SF34 CREW WAS ISSUED TKOF CLRNC AS A LNDG ACR JET WAS ON SHORT FINAL ON RWY 13L AT DFW.
Narrative: TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF ON RWY 13L. I RELEASED THE BRAKES AND WAS ADDING PWR WHEN I HEARD ANOTHER ACFT CALL, 'TWR, DID YOU JUST CLR AN ACFT TO TAKE OFF RWY 13L?' I REDUCED THE PWR BACK TO IDLE AND SIMULTANEOUSLY LOOKED OUT THE L SIDE OF THE ACFT TO SEE AN ACR JET ON SHORT FINAL FOR RWY 17L. NORMALLY, I LOOK TO CLR THE FINAL FOR RWY 17L BEFORE TAKING OFF OF RWY 13L, BUT THIS TIME I DID NOT DO SO. THE CALL BY THE OTHER PLT WAS MY FIRST CLUE THAT SOMETHING WAS POSSIBLY WRONG. IF I HAD TAKEN OFF, I AM POSITIVE WE WOULD HAVE CLRED THE OTHER ACFT, BUT THE SEPARATION WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT AND SAFETY. I EXITED THE RWY AND TAXIED BACK TO THE HOLD SHORT TO RESUME THE DEP.
