Narrative:

I landed on runway 34 and tower instructed to taxi to the end of runway 34, and hold short of runway 20. Meanwhile, a jet was landing on runway 2. I did as instructed, but failed to realize that the hold short line on runway 34 is well before the end of runway 34, so I taxied past that point expecting a hold short line parallel to runway 20, across the short piece of taxiway Q which connects the ends of the 2 runways. After I stopped short of runway 20, I called tower for permission to cross, and got an earful of unhappiness from the tower controller for crossing the hold short line. He said if I didn't understand the instruction, I should have asked for clarification. We didn't appear to understand that his instructions were perfectly clear, and I understood them perfectly -- I just didn't realize that the hold short lien for runway 20 was nowhere near runway 20, but well back on runway 34.

Title: DURING LAHSO, PLT MISSES HOLD SHORT LINE AT RIC.

Narrative: I LANDED ON RWY 34 AND TWR INSTRUCTED TO TAXI TO THE END OF RWY 34, AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 20. MEANWHILE, A JET WAS LNDG ON RWY 2. I DID AS INSTRUCTED, BUT FAILED TO REALIZE THAT THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON RWY 34 IS WELL BEFORE THE END OF RWY 34, SO I TAXIED PAST THAT POINT EXPECTING A HOLD SHORT LINE PARALLEL TO RWY 20, ACROSS THE SHORT PIECE OF TXWY Q WHICH CONNECTS THE ENDS OF THE 2 RWYS. AFTER I STOPPED SHORT OF RWY 20, I CALLED TWR FOR PERMISSION TO CROSS, AND GOT AN EARFUL OF UNHAPPINESS FROM THE TWR CTLR FOR XING THE HOLD SHORT LINE. HE SAID IF I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTION, I SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR CLARIFICATION. WE DIDN'T APPEAR TO UNDERSTAND THAT HIS INSTRUCTIONS WERE PERFECTLY CLR, AND I UNDERSTOOD THEM PERFECTLY -- I JUST DIDN'T REALIZE THAT THE HOLD SHORT LIEN FOR RWY 20 WAS NOWHERE NEAR RWY 20, BUT WELL BACK ON RWY 34.
