Narrative:

There is a B767 airworthiness directive that prohibits operation of the center tank fuel boost pumps on the B767 with less than 1000 pounds of fuel in the tank. The 1000 pounds is unusable ballast. I inadvertently operated the center fuel boost pumps below 1000 pounds. The fuel confign EICAS message is on with more than approximately 1200 pounds in the center tank. I normally cancel the fuel confign for takeoff and then burn down to 1000 pounds the first part of cruise. Most first officer's indicate most capts fly with the fuel confign light on and do not turn on the center pumps. I am going to do that now.
