Narrative:
I was to have been a passenger on a business flight to tvl, while another pilot was checked out by an instructor. Being pressed for time, it was agreed that after the preflight I would fly left seat as I was checked out. The new pilot would observe from the right seat, and the CFI would brief from the left back seat. I had not flown from the southwest ramp area at grr in yrs. I received a taxi clearance to runway 28L, intersection B departure. I normally refuse intersection departures, but accepted it, thinking that taxiway B was near the threshold. As we taxied across runway 35, and approached what I thought was taxiway B, ground control called and said I had passed it and crossed runway 35 without a clearance. Others in the airplane talking had not helped, but I was mortified that I had violated a taxi clearance. There was no conflicting traffic. I then requested the full length of the runway, and received a clearance to taxi to the end. Had I realized that taxiway B was not where I thought it was, (I was thinking of taxiway a, which is where people used to go for intersection takeoff), I would have refused the clearance. In the future, I will simply refuse intersection departures and stop making exceptions, because I'm in a hurry.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT TAXIING FOR DEP AT GRR CROSSED RWY WITHOUT ATC CLRNC.
Narrative: I WAS TO HAVE BEEN A PAX ON A BUSINESS FLT TO TVL, WHILE ANOTHER PLT WAS CHKED OUT BY AN INSTRUCTOR. BEING PRESSED FOR TIME, IT WAS AGREED THAT AFTER THE PREFLT I WOULD FLY L SEAT AS I WAS CHKED OUT. THE NEW PLT WOULD OBSERVE FROM THE R SEAT, AND THE CFI WOULD BRIEF FROM THE L BACK SEAT. I HAD NOT FLOWN FROM THE SW RAMP AREA AT GRR IN YRS. I RECEIVED A TAXI CLRNC TO RWY 28L, INTXN B DEP. I NORMALLY REFUSE INTXN DEPS, BUT ACCEPTED IT, THINKING THAT TXWY B WAS NEAR THE THRESHOLD. AS WE TAXIED ACROSS RWY 35, AND APCHED WHAT I THOUGHT WAS TXWY B, GND CTL CALLED AND SAID I HAD PASSED IT AND CROSSED RWY 35 WITHOUT A CLRNC. OTHERS IN THE AIRPLANE TALKING HAD NOT HELPED, BUT I WAS MORTIFIED THAT I HAD VIOLATED A TAXI CLRNC. THERE WAS NO CONFLICTING TFC. I THEN REQUESTED THE FULL LENGTH OF THE RWY, AND RECEIVED A CLRNC TO TAXI TO THE END. HAD I REALIZED THAT TXWY B WAS NOT WHERE I THOUGHT IT WAS, (I WAS THINKING OF TXWY A, WHICH IS WHERE PEOPLE USED TO GO FOR INTXN TKOF), I WOULD HAVE REFUSED THE CLRNC. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL SIMPLY REFUSE INTXN DEPS AND STOP MAKING EXCEPTIONS, BECAUSE I'M IN A HURRY.
