Narrative:
Pushed back from gate at san antonio, and engine start all normal. Received taxi instructions from ground to taxi to runway 12R via taxiway north and taxiway G. We made a right turn off of ramp, and then a left turn onto taxiway north. Pointed northeast on taxiway north and perpendicular to runway 12R/30L. Situational awareness dropped, and the turn onto taxiway G was not made. Thinking we were crossing runway 3/21, we proceeded across the hold short line of runway 12R/30L, when ground told us to hold our position. We stopped short of the runway. Aircraft holding in position for takeoff on runway 12R had takeoff clearance cancelled. Taxi route was reviewed in briefing at gate prior to pushback. Taxi charts were out and on display for taxi. Factors: 1) crew rest minimum (8 hours) -- long day prior. Did not get to hotel until XA00 in the morning. Did get required rest. 2) right turn out of parking and left turn onto taxiway north confused both pilots into thinking they were paralleling runway 12R instead of runway 3/21. 3) trying to run checklist at a critical point during taxi.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 TAXIING FOR DEP AT SAT ENTERED RWY 3/21 WITHOUT ATC CLRNC. ACFT IN TKOF POS, CLRNC CANCELLED.
Narrative: PUSHED BACK FROM GATE AT SAN ANTONIO, AND ENG START ALL NORMAL. RECEIVED TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FROM GND TO TAXI TO RWY 12R VIA TXWY N AND TXWY G. WE MADE A R TURN OFF OF RAMP, AND THEN A L TURN ONTO TXWY N. POINTED NE ON TXWY N AND PERPENDICULAR TO RWY 12R/30L. SITUATIONAL AWARENESS DROPPED, AND THE TURN ONTO TXWY G WAS NOT MADE. THINKING WE WERE XING RWY 3/21, WE PROCEEDED ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE OF RWY 12R/30L, WHEN GND TOLD US TO HOLD OUR POS. WE STOPPED SHORT OF THE RWY. ACFT HOLDING IN POS FOR TKOF ON RWY 12R HAD TKOF CLRNC CANCELLED. TAXI RTE WAS REVIEWED IN BRIEFING AT GATE PRIOR TO PUSHBACK. TAXI CHARTS WERE OUT AND ON DISPLAY FOR TAXI. FACTORS: 1) CREW REST MINIMUM (8 HRS) -- LONG DAY PRIOR. DID NOT GET TO HOTEL UNTIL XA00 IN THE MORNING. DID GET REQUIRED REST. 2) R TURN OUT OF PARKING AND L TURN ONTO TXWY N CONFUSED BOTH PLTS INTO THINKING THEY WERE PARALLELING RWY 12R INSTEAD OF RWY 3/21. 3) TRYING TO RUN CHKLIST AT A CRITICAL POINT DURING TAXI.
