Narrative:
After departure from las and almost at switchover to ZLA, flight experienced a tail compartment temperature high light. We performed the checklist items and the light went out. We elected to proceed with the trip, which was a checklist option. As soon as we added power, the light came back on. The captain aborted the flight and returned to las. The captain declared an emergency. When we descended into las, the light remained out. Crash fire rescue equipment escorted us to the gate with no further incident.
