Narrative:
Red tail compartment temperature high light. Shortly after takeoff from sjc the red tail compartment temperature high light illuminated along with red warning lights. Performed memory items of emergency checklist followed by complete checklist. Emergency declared and returned to sjc. Red light never went out until power reduction in landing flare. Smooth touchdown of overweight landing of 142000 pounds.

Narrative: RED TAIL COMPARTMENT TEMP HIGH LIGHT. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF FROM SJC THE RED TAIL COMPARTMENT TEMP HIGH LIGHT ILLUMINATED ALONG WITH RED WARNING LIGHTS. PERFORMED MEMORY ITEMS OF EMER CHKLIST FOLLOWED BY COMPLETE CHKLIST. EMER DECLARED AND RETURNED TO SJC. RED LIGHT NEVER WENT OUT UNTIL PWR REDUCTION IN LNDG FLARE.
