Narrative:
The first officer completed the landing and xferred control to me at 70 KTS, just adjacent taxiway a. I judged this taxiway too close to make at our speed and planned to exit at another taxiway just ahead. I made the turn off the runway and realized this was a crossing runway. I exited this runway immediately onto the next taxiway. Totally my mistake -- preventable by closer attention to signage and airport diagrams. No conflict occurred, thankfully.
