Narrative:
On ILS runway 31L approach at jfk we were approximately 40 degrees intercept angle for localizer. ATC instructed us to keep our speed up, we're #1 for runway 31L. Just outside FAF we were configured flaps 20 degrees, airspeed approximately 210 KTS. I called gear down flaps 30 degrees followed by flaps 45 degrees at which time the first officer and I noticed us through the localizer off course to the right. I disconnected the autoplt and began a left turn to correct. Shortly thereafter, ATC instructed a left turn to a heading and we began to execute a missed approach. After vectors 'back around,' we completed the approach to landing. Ultimately, I believe the first officer and myself should have been more vigilant in monitoring our position. I also believe approaching the localizer course at a larger than normal intercept angle combined with a faster airspeed than usual also contributed to the deviation. The autoplt did capture the localizer, but then was unable to maintain the course.

Title: CL65. THE N90 APCH CTLR VECTORED IN THE ACFT 5 MI FROM THE ARPT, AT A 40 DEG INTERCEPT ANGLE, AT 210 KTS IN IMC AT JFK. THE CREW OVERSHOT THE LOC COURSE AND DID A GAR.

I CALLED GEAR DOWN FLAPS 30 DEGS FOLLOWED BY FLAPS 45 DEGS AT WHICH TIME THE FO AND I NOTICED US THROUGH THE LOC OFF COURSE TO THE R. I DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND BEGAN A L TURN TO CORRECT. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, ATC INSTRUCTED A L TURN TO A HDG AND WE BEGAN TO EXECUTE A MISSED APCH. AFTER VECTORS 'BACK AROUND,' WE COMPLETED THE APCH TO LNDG. ULTIMATELY, I BELIEVE THE FO AND MYSELF SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE VIGILANT IN MONITORING OUR POS. I ALSO BELIEVE APCHING THE LOC COURSE AT A LARGER THAN NORMAL INTERCEPT ANGLE COMBINED WITH A FASTER AIRSPD THAN USUAL ALSO CONTRIBUTED TO THE DEV. THE AUTOPLT DID CAPTURE THE LOC, BUT THEN WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN THE COURSE.
