Narrative:
Aircraft #1 was at FL290 with aircraft #2 in a descent to FL230 landing ord. When I noticed the situation; I turned aircraft #2 to a 330 degree heading and amended the altitude to FL300. Aircraft #2 said he would climb back to FL300 and turn to a 330 degree heading. Aircraft came within 5 mi and less than 1000 ft separation.

Title: ZAU CTLR EXPERIENCED OPERROR AT FL290. CTLR WAS LATE IN RECOGNIZING THE DEVELOPING LOSS OF SEPARATION.
Narrative: ACFT #1 WAS AT FL290 WITH ACFT #2 IN A DSCNT TO FL230 LNDG ORD. WHEN I NOTICED THE SITUATION; I TURNED ACFT #2 TO A 330 DEG HDG AND AMENDED THE ALT TO FL300. ACFT #2 SAID HE WOULD CLB BACK TO FL300 AND TURN TO A 330 DEG HDG. ACFT CAME WITHIN 5 MI AND LESS THAN 1000 FT SEPARATION.
