Narrative:
Our flight landed cvg runway 18R. Cleared to taxi via txwys B and K to hold short of runway 18C. Monitoring tower frequency 118.3 and approaching runway 18C on taxiway K; cvg tower issued a clearance for; 'air carrier X to cross runway 18C; turn left on taxiway D and contact tower at spot 8 south.' the captain began to slow the aircraft approaching the runway 18C hold short line so as to allow time for clarification of the crossing clearance. Cvg tower issued a clarification using our flight number and reissued our clearance to cross runway 18C. As clearance was being received to cross; landing traffic was observed and not considered to be a factor. At this time we proceeded to cross the runway as ATC had cleared. At this time; company aircraft on final queried ATC on the timing of our crossing and if spacing was ok. ATC's response was to issue us a clearance to stop. We immediately stopped; at which point our aircraft was already across the hold short line for runway 18C. The aircraft on final elected to execute a go around. Our flight proceeded to the gate without further incident. With the recent opening of runway 18R in cvg; ATC is now required to manage an additional point in which runway 18C is regularly crossed. It adds an additional consideration as this relates to timing and spacing with arrivals and departures to runway 18C as well as departures from runway 27. This increased workload requires that extreme vigilance and awareness be maintained by ATC and flight crews at all times as we all continue to get used to working in this new environment.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CRJ200 CREW CLRED TO THEIR CVG GATE INCURRED RWY 18 AS PER THEIR CLRNC CAUSING A SHORT FINAL ACFT TO EXECUTE A GO AROUND.
Narrative: OUR FLT LANDED CVG RWY 18R. CLRED TO TAXI VIA TXWYS B AND K TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 18C. MONITORING TWR FREQ 118.3 AND APCHING RWY 18C ON TXWY K; CVG TWR ISSUED A CLRNC FOR; 'ACR X TO CROSS RWY 18C; TURN L ON TXWY D AND CONTACT TWR AT SPOT 8 S.' THE CAPT BEGAN TO SLOW THE ACFT APCHING THE RWY 18C HOLD SHORT LINE SO AS TO ALLOW TIME FOR CLARIFICATION OF THE XING CLRNC. CVG TWR ISSUED A CLARIFICATION USING OUR FLT NUMBER AND REISSUED OUR CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 18C. AS CLRNC WAS BEING RECEIVED TO CROSS; LNDG TFC WAS OBSERVED AND NOT CONSIDERED TO BE A FACTOR. AT THIS TIME WE PROCEEDED TO CROSS THE RWY AS ATC HAD CLRED. AT THIS TIME; COMPANY ACFT ON FINAL QUERIED ATC ON THE TIMING OF OUR XING AND IF SPACING WAS OK. ATC'S RESPONSE WAS TO ISSUE US A CLRNC TO STOP. WE IMMEDIATELY STOPPED; AT WHICH POINT OUR ACFT WAS ALREADY ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 18C. THE ACFT ON FINAL ELECTED TO EXECUTE A GO AROUND. OUR FLT PROCEEDED TO THE GATE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. WITH THE RECENT OPENING OF RWY 18R IN CVG; ATC IS NOW REQUIRED TO MANAGE AN ADDITIONAL POINT IN WHICH RWY 18C IS REGULARLY CROSSED. IT ADDS AN ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATION AS THIS RELATES TO TIMING AND SPACING WITH ARRIVALS AND DEPS TO RWY 18C AS WELL AS DEPS FROM RWY 27. THIS INCREASED WORKLOAD REQUIRES THAT EXTREME VIGILANCE AND AWARENESS BE MAINTAINED BY ATC AND FLT CREWS AT ALL TIMES AS WE ALL CONTINUE TO GET USED TO WORKING IN THIS NEW ENVIRONMENT.
