Narrative:
After departure from thermal airport in california; we were given a rerte and a clearance we did not expect. We did not have all the proper charts handy in the cockpit and had difficulty finding the NAVAID in the clearance at the time. As a result; we were unable to comply with the clearance and we had to get radar vectored to our destination; lax.
