Narrative:
I was departing pdx runway 28R. Tower informed me of traffic crossing pdx airspace to land at vuo when clearing me for takeoff. Upon reaching about 500 ft; I had visual contact of the traffic and pdx indicated that I could turn to 310 degrees at pilot's discretion. I continued climbing in the turn. Upon reaching 310 degrees; tower asked me whether I would be able to overclb the other traffic. I had lost visual contact of the other traffic; and thought that it was below my cowl. I informed tower that I was at my maximum climb rate and that I could not see the other traffic. Tower requested me to maintain visual separation and contact pdx departure. When traffic appears to be in the pattern for vuo; aircraft departing pdx runway 28 right should not be turned northbound until reaching 15000 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SR20 VFR DEP FROM PDX ACCEPTS VISUAL SEPARATION RESPONSIBILITY FROM OVERFLIGHT; THEN LOSES SIGHT OF ACFT; SETTING UP POSSIBLE CONFLICT.
Narrative: I WAS DEPARTING PDX RWY 28R. TWR INFORMED ME OF TRAFFIC CROSSING PDX AIRSPACE TO LAND AT VUO WHEN CLRING ME FOR TKOF. UPON REACHING ABOUT 500 FT; I HAD VISUAL CONTACT OF THE TRAFFIC AND PDX INDICATED THAT I COULD TURN TO 310 DEGS AT PLT'S DISCRETION. I CONTINUED CLIMBING IN THE TURN. UPON REACHING 310 DEGS; TWR ASKED ME WHETHER I WOULD BE ABLE TO OVERCLB THE OTHER TRAFFIC. I HAD LOST VISUAL CONTACT OF THE OTHER TRAFFIC; AND THOUGHT THAT IT WAS BELOW MY COWL. I INFORMED TWR THAT I WAS AT MY MAX CLB RATE AND THAT I COULD NOT SEE THE OTHER TRAFFIC. TWR REQUESTED ME TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION AND CONTACT PDX DEP. WHEN TRAFFIC APPEARS TO BE IN THE PATTERN FOR VUO; ACFT DEPARTING PDX RWY 28 R SHOULD NOT BE TURNED NORTHBOUND UNTIL REACHING 15000 FT.
