Narrative:
Tower reported winds 270 degrees at 10 KTS. Tower reported possible GS interference due to departing traffic. Aircraft stabilized prior to GS capture with autoplt engaged in approach mode. Aircraft was stabilized at 1000 ft and 500 ft. Autoplt tuned off due to GS variations prior to 500 ft; autothrottles still engaged. Due to variable winds (7-13 KTS) on short final; captain overrode autothrottles having to add power to maintain GS and airspeed. On short final; captain blocked autothrottle automatic-retard due to sink rate in close as winds abruptly dropped off. There were no sink rate calls from GPWS. Touchdown rate was normal just short of the aim point slightly nose high but acceptable in my opinion. A pilot holding short of runway 30R advised us of a possible 'tail strike.' postflt revealed a damaged #3 VHF antenna. No other damage to the aircraft was sustained. No wrinkles; no scraped paint; no bare aluminum except a small portion of the VHF antenna.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD11 FLT CREW HAS TAIL STRIKE DURING LNDG.
Narrative: TWR RPTED WINDS 270 DEGS AT 10 KTS. TWR RPTED POSSIBLE GS INTERFERENCE DUE TO DEPARTING TFC. ACFT STABILIZED PRIOR TO GS CAPTURE WITH AUTOPLT ENGAGED IN APCH MODE. ACFT WAS STABILIZED AT 1000 FT AND 500 FT. AUTOPLT TUNED OFF DUE TO GS VARIATIONS PRIOR TO 500 FT; AUTOTHROTTLES STILL ENGAGED. DUE TO VARIABLE WINDS (7-13 KTS) ON SHORT FINAL; CAPT OVERRODE AUTOTHROTTLES HAVING TO ADD PWR TO MAINTAIN GS AND AIRSPD. ON SHORT FINAL; CAPT BLOCKED AUTOTHROTTLE AUTO-RETARD DUE TO SINK RATE IN CLOSE AS WINDS ABRUPTLY DROPPED OFF. THERE WERE NO SINK RATE CALLS FROM GPWS. TOUCHDOWN RATE WAS NORMAL JUST SHORT OF THE AIM POINT SLIGHTLY NOSE HIGH BUT ACCEPTABLE IN MY OPINION. A PLT HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 30R ADVISED US OF A POSSIBLE 'TAIL STRIKE.' POSTFLT REVEALED A DAMAGED #3 VHF ANTENNA. NO OTHER DAMAGE TO THE ACFT WAS SUSTAINED. NO WRINKLES; NO SCRAPED PAINT; NO BARE ALUMINUM EXCEPT A SMALL PORTION OF THE VHF ANTENNA.
