Narrative:
While cruising at FL390 and just prior to the top of descent point en route to ZZZ; we received a 'right oil filter' EICAS message. All other engine parameters appeared normal. We initiated the 'right oil filter' checklist and requested a lower altitude from ATC. Upon completing the checklist which called for the engine to be shut down if the message did not clear upon throttle reduction (which it didn't); we secured the right engine according to the engine shutdown checklist and declared an emergency with ATC. Upon conferring with dispatch about possible suitable airports; I decided that due to our proximity to ZZZ and our current altitude of FL240 that ZZZ would be our best option. Dispatch agreed. We coordinated our arrival with ATC and requested emergency equipment to be standing by. I briefed the purser of the situation and ordered a cabin advisory. We briefed the single engine approach and go around profiles and proceeded with an uneventful approach and landing. We proceeded to the gate under our own power. Coordination between the crew; ATC; and the company was professional and effective.

WE COORDINATED OUR ARR WITH ATC AND REQUESTED EMER EQUIP TO BE STANDING BY. I BRIEFED THE PURSER OF THE SITUATION AND ORDERED A CABIN ADVISORY. WE BRIEFED THE SINGLE ENG APCH AND GAR PROFILES AND PROCEEDED WITH AN UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG. WE PROCEEDED TO THE GATE UNDER OUR OWN PWR. COORD BTWN THE CREW; ATC; AND THE COMPANY WAS PROFESSIONAL AND EFFECTIVE.
