Narrative:
Aborted takeoff; approximately 130 KTS on takeoff crew heard a popping noise and aircraft yawed to the right. Crew aborted the takeoff. Aircraft taxied clear of runway; called emergency equipment to inspect aircraft. Maintenance came out to inspect aircraft; #3 tire came apart and damaged the right flap. After approximately 15 mins all main tire fuse plugs blew and tires deflated. Nothing further. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that runway and aircraft inspection revealed that the tread separated from the #3 main tire. The noise described was that of the tire debris striking the flap. Substantial yaw was encountered; and the flight crew did not know of the source of the noise; so the flight crew elected to reject the takeoff prior to reaching V1 (150 KT+.) the aircraft is equipped with an 'rejected takeoff' brake setting; so heavy braking was applied when the abort was initiated.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-800 FLT CREW REJECTED TKOF WHEN ACFT BEGAN TO YAW AND 'POPPING' NOISE WAS HEARD IN THE COCKPIT.
Narrative: ABORTED TKOF; APPROX 130 KTS ON TKOF CREW HEARD A POPPING NOISE AND ACFT YAWED TO THE R. CREW ABORTED THE TKOF. ACFT TAXIED CLR OF RWY; CALLED EMER EQUIP TO INSPECT ACFT. MAINT CAME OUT TO INSPECT ACFT; #3 TIRE CAME APART AND DAMAGED THE R FLAP. AFTER APPROX 15 MINS ALL MAIN TIRE FUSE PLUGS BLEW AND TIRES DEFLATED. NOTHING FURTHER. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THAT RWY AND ACFT INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE #3 MAIN TIRE. THE NOISE DESCRIBED WAS THAT OF THE TIRE DEBRIS STRIKING THE FLAP. SUBSTANTIAL YAW WAS ENCOUNTERED; AND THE FLT CREW DID NOT KNOW OF THE SOURCE OF THE NOISE; SO THE FLT CREW ELECTED TO REJECT THE TKOF PRIOR TO REACHING V1 (150 KT+.) THE ACFT IS EQUIPPED WITH AN 'RTO' BRAKE SETTING; SO HEAVY BRAKING WAS APPLIED WHEN THE ABORT WAS INITIATED.
