Narrative:

In cruise at FL320; #1 engine rolled back. We requested a lower altitude as we advised ATC we were having trouble with #1 engine. The engine subsequently flamed out and I advised we lost #1 engine and needed to divert to ZZZ. I firmly believe from that point on all parties involved understood we were an emergency aircraft. However; I don't remember saying the words 'declaring an emergency.' in hindsight; to avoid any possible confusion; I feel I should have 'said the words.' we were granted every request and ATC was superb throughout the ordeal.
