Narrative:
We pulled up to the gate. Ground equipment across hazard area lines. Called ramp to have equipment moved behind lines. Had already shut down right engine to conserve fuel on taxi in. Once equipment was moved; remaining engine was insufficient to move aircraft. Started right engine to provide necessary thrust to move aircraft to gate. Having just started right engine; I moved aircraft to the final gate position and kept right engine running to observe the required 3 min cool-down time limit. Ramp person plugged in external power and proceeded to open forward cargo door while right engine still running. I immediately shut down right engine to avoid personal injury and aircraft damage. The engine did not complete its required 3 min cool-down limit. Next time I will run the engine for 2 mins away from gate to avoid this problem.
