Narrative:
At approximately XA50 and about 40 mi sse of ZZZ the captain noticed a burning odor and asked me to confirm it which I did. We were at 4000 ft. We declared an emergency with ATC and I was directed to do the 'smoke and fire of unknown origin checklist' which I did. After the recirc fan and the bleed air were turned off the odor persisted but did not get stronger so we continued to ZZZ and informed ATC that if the situation deteriorated we would then land at the nearest available airport. We informed the flight attendant and company of the situation and asked the flight attendant to monitor conditions in the back in case it got worse. She said it had stabilized and the odor was more towards the front than the rear of the aircraft. At no time did we see any smoke or fire. We landed uneventfully at ZZZ and after a visual inspection by emergency equipment standing by we taxied to the gate and deplaned passenger.
