Narrative:

Uneventful flight up to this point. At cruise at FL360; north of ZZZ; going direct to ZZZ1. Received an EICAS and status message 'left engine fuel filter bypass.' pulled up flight manual which stated to land nearest suitable due possible engine failure. Checked distances and weather and decided on ZZZ2. Declared an emergency and received a clearance to turn and proceeded to ZZZ2. Advised dispatch and declared a cabin advisory with flight attendant. Made uneventful approach and landing on runway xx in ZZZ2 in clear conditions.
