Narrative:
Shortly after takeoff; I heard a loud; ongoing noise; I walked throughout the cabin; looked out window; and saw a flame coming out of engine 1 right; a dead head first officer also saw it; I immediately contacted flight deck; they got to me shortly after saying there was a problem with engine 1 right; and they were in the process of shutting it down; and this would be considered an emergency. I followed instructions outlined in my manual; preparing the cabin for an anticipated normal landing; and that fire and rescue would be on ground for precautionary needs. The landing was normal; passengers were assisted with a gate agent inside to get them on the next flight to our destination.
