Narrative:

On radar vectors for ILS approach; we were cleared; 'turn right heading two zero zero; intercept the localizer.' this was a ninety degree turn on to final within three miles of the localizer. It seemed unusual to both of us and we discussed it in brief. We both understood a clearance to 2000 ft and set 2000 ft in the altitude window of the MCP using fom procedures (set; point; and respond). ATC called a low altitude alert and told us to climb and maintain 3000 ft. We complied and completed the approach and landing uneventfully.
