Narrative:
Just an FYI. On departure off of msy and about 70 miles west of veils intersection our GPWS database indicated [an obstacle] in red numbers '150'. That's a pretty high obstacle down there or anywhere for that matter. I asked the center controller if it was a moored balloon. He indicated that the balloon disappeared during the katrina hurricane and had not been replaced. That was about 5 years ago. How often are the GPWS databases updated?
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: An Air Carrier Pilot reported that his aircraft's EGPWS detected an obstacle at 15;000' about seventy miles west of VEILS intersection. A balloon was once tethered at that location but is no longer there. The EGPWS database accuracy is questioned because of the possible existence of new hazards not in the database.
