Narrative:
After departure from cle lax was cleared to climb to 6000' on vectors. At about 5000' climbing at 2800 FPM, departure cleared us to fly a heading to intercept an arwy. The flying first officer diverted his attention to search his charts for the bearing and VOR frequency. I dialed the new heading into the heading bug and selected the legs page of the FMC to program the intercept angle. The first officer climbed through 6000'. We both realized the problem when the altitude warning sounded at 6300'. We were climbing so fast that we peaked at 6600'. We corrected back to 6000' within 10-15 seconds and continued to our lax destination. First officer hand flying. Automatic throttle off. F/D off, command bars stowed. Supplemental information from acn 89924: the captain's autocratic mgt style was one in which the first officer's comments/suggestions were more of a nuisance than help. Both crew members must be familiar with the route of flight and must work as a crew.
