Narrative:
Cleared across 24L at Z by tower with instructions from ground control 'taxi east; right; south route'. First time for me using the 'new' right taxiway since recently opened. Captain and I made turn on E-13 incorrectly and stopped aircraft straight ahead. Permission from ground control to do a turn and get back to right approved. As captain powered up for left turn she noticed a yellow sign (initially at our 7 o'clock) out her window and we both thought right main gear clearance could be in doubt. We checked for no obstructions on surface and continued eastbound and then right turn to join taxiway right southbound. Evidently we are not the first crew to turn onto E-13 thinking it was the 'new' taxiway right. Our 10-9 pages were out but the left and right turns come quickly when crossing runway 24L at Z. There is a caution on the 10-8B page but it is buried below the runway somewhat and I missed it. We expected to roll to aa off of 24R upon landing but a B747 had landed in front of us and was occupying. Possibly better signage/lighting and more attention to detail might have precluded this event.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: An air carrier First Officer reported that after clearing LAX Runway 24 on Taxiway Z; ATC taxi clearance was E; R; South Route. On Taxiway E the aircraft the crew became confused and turned right onto Taxiway E-13; claiming it was not clearly marked and very close to Taxiway R.
