Narrative:
After we landed ATC told us to cross 8L on K and hold short of a to let an air carrier aircraft pass and to follow them to the ramp/gate. I held short of a; set the brake and watched as they came taxiing up a. As he got closer the first officer got on the radio and told them to stop repeatedly and finally he stopped with his left wing tip 40 ft short of our cockpit. Had he continued there would have been a horizontal overlap I don't know how we would have been vertically; the wing tip was above my level but I don't know if it would have cleared our aircraft. We had a tug come out and push us back. The traffic continued and we taxied to the gate without incident.

Title: While holding short of a taxiway for crossing traffic as cleared by HNL Ground Control; the flight crew of a B757-200 alerted the other flight crew to stop when they became concerned that the other aircraft's wingtip would not clear their aircraft.
