Narrative:

Inbound to ewr, cleared to descend to cross 25 north of sparta VOR at 6000'. Captain (I) was flying and first officer was trying to get arrival information from company radio. I was inbound on 209 degree radial and leveling at 6000' when a low, fixed wing aircraft passed underneath us. It was heading about 150 degrees. I saw it after it passed under us and was flying away. First officer did not see it. It scared me and I guess separation at 400'. I asked boston center if they saw the aircraft. They did not. A minute later, they picked it up 2 mi away at 5700'. Lesson learned, get ATIS and company calls done before descent. No evasive action taken and no report filed.
