Narrative:
Arrived lax, runway 25L, at XA12 10/wed/88, weighing 330000#. After turnoff we held short of runway 25R for a few minutes. Taxi across runway 25R onto the ramp was accomplished. Aircraft parked at gate at XA28. After engine shutdown the crew proceeded to operations. We were told at that time that a baggage cart opp gate had moved and injured an air carrier B ground employee. Minimum thrust was used at all times during the parking process. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: confirmed this occurred at gate where once aircraft turned to final straight in approach to gate tail is pointed at gates at adjacent terminal with marginal distance. Air carrier procedure is if necessary to stop prior to gate arrival to do so before turning toward gate and then get aircraft moving and power back to minimum before turning to gate. Once turned to gate and stopped with heavy aircraft, should consider calling for tug to get to final position.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR WDB ON FINAL APCH TO GATE BLEW BAGGAGE CART INTO EMPLOYEE AT ADJACENT TERMINAL CAUSING INJURY.
Narrative: ARRIVED LAX, RWY 25L, AT XA12 10/WED/88, WEIGHING 330000#. AFTER TURNOFF WE HELD SHORT OF RWY 25R FOR A FEW MINUTES. TAXI ACROSS RWY 25R ONTO THE RAMP WAS ACCOMPLISHED. ACFT PARKED AT GATE AT XA28. AFTER ENG SHUTDOWN THE CREW PROCEEDED TO OPS. WE WERE TOLD AT THAT TIME THAT A BAGGAGE CART OPP GATE HAD MOVED AND INJURED AN ACR B GND EMPLOYEE. MINIMUM THRUST WAS USED AT ALL TIMES DURING THE PARKING PROCESS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: CONFIRMED THIS OCCURRED AT GATE WHERE ONCE ACFT TURNED TO FINAL STRAIGHT IN APCH TO GATE TAIL IS POINTED AT GATES AT ADJACENT TERMINAL WITH MARGINAL DISTANCE. ACR PROC IS IF NECESSARY TO STOP PRIOR TO GATE ARR TO DO SO BEFORE TURNING TOWARD GATE AND THEN GET ACFT MOVING AND PWR BACK TO MINIMUM BEFORE TURNING TO GATE. ONCE TURNED TO GATE AND STOPPED WITH HVY ACFT, SHOULD CONSIDER CALLING FOR TUG TO GET TO FINAL POS.
